Child Protection Policy Development

Purpose:

To equip, empower and inspire organisations responsible for the care of children and young people to maximise the safety of the children and/or young people in their care by:

  • Identifying and responding appropriately to potential threats to the safety and wellbeing of children in their care
  • Implementing policy and procedures to minimise access for child abuse offenders to become involved with their organisation and to deal appropriately with any abuse or suspicion of abuse that may occur
  • Educating parents and staff about policy and procedures to ensure support and compliance
  • Ensuring the policy and procedures are reviewed and sustained to ensure the ongoing safety and wellbeing of children and staff
  • Providing a supportive work environment for their staff and volunteers.

Personal Safety Australia recommends the following inclusions in child protection policies developed:

  • Rationale
  • Relevant definitions and legislative references
  • Code of Conduct
  • Staff Recruitment Procedures
  • Staff and Volunteer Training, Support and Supervision
  • Complaints Management Process
  • Children’s Participation and Empowerment
  • Review Guidelines.
